Goodluck Garry Dowding

The one and only Garry Dowding, The Club Champion for the past 3 years running, Foursomes Champion, Mixed foursomes Champion, +2 Marker and a good bloke and great mate and golf teacher, although it hasn’t helped me recently but I’m sure everyone knows Garry or has at least heard Garry on the course or seen him out on the practice range.

In the many years I’ve known Garry and played golf with Garry, I’ve never seen a more confident and consistent player. If you ever see a spare spot in a tee slot with Garry’s name, make sure you join and see Garry play. Garry makes the golf of golf look so easy and most of the time its always a fun round when your in Garry’s group.

Garry Dowding will be competing in the NSW Amateur Championship in Sydney next week. The field size for the Championship will be 264 players (132 men, 132 women). Within this Championship, Garry will contest the NSW Medal. The NSW Medal is played over two courses. It is two rounds of 18-holes stroke play for the men’s field, played over two days. The field is divided between the two venues for the first day’s play with players changing venues for their second round. The winner of the 36 holes stroke play section of the Championship is the winner of the NSW Medal. The leading 32 players from the NSW Medal will advance to the 3rd & 4th Rounds. Within that event the NSW CHAMPION of CHAMPIONS will be decided, which is all the Club Champions from each nominated club.

Garry will be heading down to Sydney this week to play a few practice rounds at the below courses in preparation for the NSW Championship.

27th January – Round 1 at Oatlands Golf Club – Sydney

28th January – Round 2 at Strathfield Golf Club. – Sydney

It’s my honor as Men’s Captain of Club Banora to announce we will be sponsoring Garry to represent Club Banora at this event. We have covered his entry fee’s and a box of ProV1’s with “GD” on them.

Good Luck GD and we all wish you the very best and the whole Club is behind you. In your own words Garry, “Positive thoughts bring’s positive outcomes”

⛳ Saturday Highlights

Another great day on the course delivered strong scoring, close finishes. Well done to everyone who featured across the divisions, ball rundown, and special events.

It was a mixed day for everyone I feel, some had no issues and broke their handicap with ease, while others struggled to get 30 points of more. People shanking the ball, throw in a few air swings and a lot of birdies. Today we had 21 Birdies in today’s field which is a record and goes to show how well the course is playing. Full Credit to Brendon and the boys for doing excellent job out there. Hopefully the plastic owl on the 18th will keep away the birds from eating the greens.

We had another successful competition day with Ryan Modini correctly filling out his score, way to go Ryan !

Division 2
Nick Lawler set the pace with an impressive 44 points off a handicap of 22. David Kammer matched the score on 44 points off a handicap of 28, securing second place on countback. Men’s Wed S/Stableford 7/1

The Men’s Stableford competition held on Wednesday, 7th January 2026 was another successful event, with some impressive results across all divisions. A solid field and players fought hard for the top spots, and there were some fantastic winners in both the place getters and ball rundown categories, along with a few lucky participants taking home special prizes. Let’s dive into the highlights!

Unfortunately there was one DQ in todays field and its a friendly reminder to please sign your card. In this case the markers signature was correct in where it was signed but it slightly overlapped into the player signed box. On submitting the card into the computer, the computer would of taken that overlap from the markers signature as the players signature and wouldn’t of produced the message “Player card not signed” as a warning prior to submitting. Please check and double check your card before submitting that card.

Winners by Division

  • Division 1:
Liam Henzell clinched the top spot with a score of 50 points, earning a $50 Voucher. Kevin Bartlett, with a strong 37 points, took the $35 Voucher as the runner-up.
  • Division 2:
Paul Quinlin dominated Division 2 with a solid 40 points, securing the $50 Voucher. Ross Telfer followed closely with 39 points, taking home the $35 Voucher as the runner-up.

🏌️ Saturday Monthly Medal Highlights

It’s good to be back! Another year. A strong field of 68 played the January 2026 Monthly Medal. The course held up well despite the rain we had over night. Full credit to Brendon and the boys for keeping the course looking its best. For those who saw that close Pro Pin marker on the 7th, rumor has it that the player missed the putt for birdie and someone broke the long-standing Shanks per round record today. It’s only the beginning of 2026 and it can only get better for those players who found the first round back an uphill battle. Jokes aside, it was good to be back playing and seeing everyone after what seemed a long break from last year.

I hope everyone had a Merry and safe Christmas and saw in the new year with a BANG!

Men’s Xmas Party Wrap up

What a day!!! Beautiful conditions and a beautifully prepared course. We had a massive turn out of 101 members! The day started off with a morning sausage sizzle with Baz on the BBQ. It was a slow 4-man Ambrose but it was worth the wait to get the mid round hamburgers which just melted in your mouth. Once everyone was in, we had wraps and refreshments. This year’s raffle had the usual spirits, wines, beers, balls, vouchers and the new inclusion of 2 golf carry bags, 2 umbrella’s and 4 titleist caps.

This Year we had the inclusion of greens staff in this year’s event and moving forward this will be a on going tradition. A big thank you to Brendon Willoughby, Tim Landon, Peter Neary and Will Salter who played in our Christmas day. Words can’t express our thanks to you and other members on your ground staff for transforming the course the way you have. The course has never been better and thank you for all your hard work.

A big thank you to Barry and Sharon for preparing the food. Barry, you did an amazing job on Saturday, and everything went smoothly and perfectly. I know it was a huge day for you and thank you so much. Thanks to the Tim and Russ for handling the island house craziness and thank you for all your work behind the scenes, running comp’s and all my requests throughout the year.

A special mention to the Meat Merchant at casuarina. Mathew Quinlin supplied the snags and the hamburgers for day, and most would agree, absolutely amazing quality and just melts in your mouth. The Meat Merchant is located at casuarina.

Thank you to Twin Towns Services Club and the Board for all your support throughout the year, with a Special Mention to Ken Culpitt. Ken Helps the Committee and the golf club out so much behind the scenes. This Year Ken has revamped the Club Banora page, and it looks amazing and easier to navigate.

Plans for 2026: Well, its all pending currently, but the ideal plan would be to change hole 2 and 11. Meaning you would play the first hole which is a par 5 and then you would play the 11th Hole as the 2nd and the old 2nd hole as the 11th. This will speed up play and stop any back logs of groups and make the challenging 2nd hole a bit easier on the second time around. It will be open for discussion in the new year.

We plan to have a lot more fun days in the Men’s Golf, we hope to add a few charity days in to raise money for local charities in need, also adding more fun types of events, like Pinehurst, Texas stabled ford, Canadian 2 stroke etc. Depending on our much we drank at the party, we will be having a lot more free day’s.

The Christmas Xmas Party was a day to just enjoy with your mates and play the game we love. It didn’t matter if you won or come last, its all about getting out there and just living. We are blessed to have such an amazing course every week and a good tight knit bunch of guys that love a good laugh and sincerely care about each other. Take away all the banter and the competitive aspect and we will have an absolute great bunch of guys who just want this club to grow and get better each year.

We have lost a few members this year, Jim Benny. Bernie Anderson, John Dawes, Rosie Connolly, and Macca McGuiness. All loved and treasured members of our Club.

With that being said, here are your winners.

🏆 Winners
The standout performance came from the team of Nathan Simpson, Liam Henzell, David Williams and Shane Vanderlight, who combined beautifully to post an impressive 53.1 off a team handicap of 6.88.

Hot on their heels were Nathan Smith, Kyle Harrison, Aaron Garland and Paul Dickison, finishing with 53.5 off 6.5. Terrific scoring from both groups.

The Pro Pin Winner was Kim Hall – Taking home a brand new $100 note

Thank you to everyone for being well-behaved and patient out there on the course. I really think it was one of the best Christmas break up parties we have had in many years. Full credit to everyone involved. It’s going to be bigger and better next year. Hopefully Ryan Modini picks up his speech game, he had such promise last year. Oh well Ryan, maybe next year huh 😉

Wishing you all a merry and safe Xmas and happy new year. See you all next year!
