⛳ New Local Rule — Holes 5 & 14

A Simple Change to Keep the Game Fair

There’s a new Local Rule to be aware of at Club Banora, and it applies specifically to the timber netting post positioned to the front left of the 5th and 14th tees.

The new rule is Local Rule E-11, and while it is very simple, it’s important that everyone understands exactly what happens if your ball comes into contact with the netting post.

🏌️ What Is Local Rule E-11?

Any ball that comes into contact with the timber netting post to the front left of tee #5 or tee #14 will require the shot to be replayed — with NO penalty.

In other words:

🎯 Hit the post = Replay the shot, no penalty!

There is no penalty stroke and no need to play the ball from where it finishes.

Simply replay the shot from the original location.

🤔 Why Is This Rule Needed?

The timber netting post is there for a practical reason, but it can create an unusual situation when a golf ball strikes it.

A ball hitting the post can produce an unpredictable result, potentially giving the player a significant advantage or disadvantage that has little to do with the quality of the golf shot itself.

Local Rule E-11 provides a straightforward and fair solution.

Rather than trying to determine what happened to the ball after the contact, the rule simply says:

Contact with the post = replay the shot.

And importantly, there is no penalty for doing so.

📍 Where Does the Rule Apply?

The rule applies to the timber netting post located:

  • To the front left of tee #5
  • To the front left of tee #14

It is specifically the timber netting post that triggers the rule.

So, if your ball comes into contact with that post, remember that Local Rule E-11 applies.

⚠️ What Should You Do?

If your ball strikes the timber netting post:

  1. Stop play on that ball.
  2. Confirm that the ball has contacted the relevant timber netting post.
  3. Return to the original location of the shot.
  4. Replay the shot.
  5. No penalty stroke is added.

It’s as simple as that.

This is a FREE DAY FOR MEMBERS ONLY, with an 8:00am shotgun start, plenty of prizes up for grabs and, most importantly, a chance for us all to get behind a fantastic cause.

After the golf, we’ll be enjoying pizzas from Galileo’s Pizza 🍕 and some light refreshments — because nothing helps you forget the four-footer you missed quite like beer & pizza!

💛 LET’S BREAK OUR FUNDRAISING RECORD!

This year, we’d love to smash our previous fundraising record for Jarod Lyle’s charity.

All proceeds from the raffle will be donated, and the more money we raise, the better — because our club also goes into the draw for the chance to WIN A GOLF CART! 🏌️‍♂️🚗

We’d also love everyone to throw in a gold coin donation before the commencement of play. The golf is free, there are loads of prizes to be won, so digging around in the car console for a gold coin shouldn’t hurt too much! 😂

So grab your team, wear yellow or something bright and cheery, bring a few dollars for the raffle and come along for a brilliant day of golf, laughs, pizza and fundraising.

Let’s fill the course, have some fun and see if Club Banora can set a new fundraising record this year.

🏆 The Legend of Brent McLennan

There are some days in golf when the stars align.

There are some days when the putts drop.

And then there are days when a 32-handicapper named Brent McLennan walks onto the first tee, looks across at a 9-handicapper named Jarod Brown, and thinks:

“Yeah… I’ve got this.” 😂

Welcome to the 2026 Club Banora Matchplay Championship—a contest that had all the ingredients of a classic David vs Goliath battle.

On one side stood Jarod Brown: the golfing equivalent of a finely tuned sports car. Handicap 9. Reliable. Dangerous. Capable of hitting golf shots that actually went where he intended.

And on the other side stood Brent McLennan: handicap 32.

Thirty.

Two.

A number so large it practically needed its own postcode.

But Brent had something Jarod didn’t have quite as much of—shots.

And plenty of them.

The Battle Begins

From the opening hole, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a walk in the park for either man.

Jarod knew he had to play his best golf. Brent knew he had to… well, essentially just keep turning up and let the handicap system do some heavy lifting.

Despite the enormous handicap difference, Jarod battled brilliantly and refused to let Brent’s army of shots dictate the match.

And after nine holes, unbelievably, the match was all square.

At this point, everyone watching was thinking the same thing:

“Surely Jarod has this under control?”

Apparently, nobody had told Brent.

Then the Magic Happened…

As the back nine unfolded, something strange began happening.

The shots started appearing.

And they weren’t just appearing—they were appearing at exactly the wrong moments for Jarod.

A hole that looked like it belonged to Jarod suddenly had a little asterisk next to it:

“Brent gets a shot.”

Jarod stared at the card.

Brent smiled.

The golfing gods chuckled.

And somewhere, deep in the bowels of Club Banora, a handicap calculator whispered:

“This is going to be fun.”

The 32-handicap magic had officially been activated.

Every time Jarod looked like he was gaining momentum, another shot seemed to materialise. Brent was no longer simply playing golf—he was conducting a carefully choreographed symphony of handicap-induced chaos.

Jarod fought valiantly, keeping the match alive far longer than anyone might have expected.

And that deserves enormous credit. Then came the moment when the handicap shots started doing what handicap shots were designed to do—cause maximum emotional damage to the bloke giving them away.

Playing off 9 against a player receiving 23 shots is no small task. Jarod showed tremendous resilience, skill and determination to stay in the contest for so long.

But eventually, the relentless combination of Brent’s golf, the pressure of matchplay and those precious handicap shots proved too much.

The Final Verdict

Golf can be cruel.

Golf can be strange.

And occasionally, golf can be absolutely hilarious.

Because when the dust settled, Brent had defeated Jared on the 16th Hole.

Jarod deserves huge respect for an outstanding battle and for keeping the match alive deep into the contest. Both players should be congratulated for producing an amazing match that had everything—drama, pressure, brilliant golf and, of course, enough handicap mathematics to make a university professor reach for a calculator.

But as they say in matchplay:

There can only be one winner.

And this year, that winner is…

2026 Club Banora Match Play Championship: David vs Goliath

After weeks… no, months… of waiting, the moment has finally arrived.

The course has been set. The fairways are ready. The greens are running true. And the pins have been placed in positions so diabolical that you’d think the greenkeeper had a personal grudge against both finalists.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the 2026 Club Banora Match Play Championship Final is upon us.

And what a final we have in store.

The Road to Glory

On one side we have Jared, who has fought his way through a formidable line-up, defeating Jim Storey, Terry Foster and Will Salter to earn his place in the final.

On the other side stands Brent, who has dispatched Darren Hubery, Simon Woolley and Simon Gates on his march towards championship glory.

Both have battled. Both have survived. Both have sacrificed countless golf balls along the way.

But there is just one small problem for Jared…

He has to give Brent 23 shots!

Twenty-three.

2-3.

That’s not a handicap adjustment. That’s practically a head start to the clubhouse.

The odds are stacked firmly against Jared. Brent could theoretically spray tee shots into the neighbouring postcode, three-putt every green and still have enough shots up his sleeve to make things extremely interesting.

It is, quite literally, David versus Goliath.

Except in this version, David has a golf handicap and Goliath gets 23 shots.

Can Jared Pull Off the Impossible?

Jared will need to bring his A-game, his B-game, his C-game and possibly a few games he hasn’t even invented yet.

He’ll need fairways. He’ll need putts. He’ll need nerves of steel.

And most importantly, he’ll need Brent to have a day where the golf gods decide to send him a strongly worded letter.

Meanwhile, Brent simply needs to do what every golfer dreams of doing: play sensible golf and let the handicap system do the heavy lifting.

With 23 shots in the bank, Brent could be walking around Club Banora like a man who has already found the cheat code.

But this is match play.

Anything can happen.

A birdie here. A duff there. A heroic recovery shot. A putt that somehow refuses to go in. A golf ball mysteriously disappearing into a bush despite being hit absolutely nowhere near it.

And suddenly, the mighty Goliath can find himself in trouble.

The Final

So, after months of anticipation, the stage is set.

Jared vs Brent.

David vs Goliath.

Scratch-ish golfing pride vs 23 very valuable shots.

The pins are evil. The pressure is enormous. The bragging rights are priceless.

One player will walk away as the 2026 Club Banora Match Play Champion.

The other will walk away wondering how on earth he managed to lose to someone who was given 23 shots.

Whatever happens, one thing is certain:

There will be excuses.

Lots of excuses.

May the best golfer win… and may Jared remember that if he loses, he was only beaten by 23 shots.

Respect the Course: Pace of Play and Awareness

Golf is a game we all enjoy, and part of enjoying your round is making sure everyone on the course feels comfortable, safe and respected.

We all have a responsibility to keep up with the pace of play, but maintaining pace does not mean hitting up on the group in front of you.

Know Your Distances

Please be aware of the golfers ahead of you at all times and know your own distances and capabilities.

If there is a group in front of you, please do not hit simply because you think you cannot reach them. If there is any doubt, wait.

The group in front may be closer than you realise, may be moving back into position, or may simply not have anywhere to go. Your ball being in the air serves no purpose if the group ahead is still within range.

When in doubt, don’t hit.

The same applies when approaching greens, tees and fairways. Take a moment, look ahead and make sure the way is clear before playing your shot.

Please Don’t Take Matters Into Your Own Hands

We also ask members not to approach or tell fellow golfers to hurry up, particularly while they are playing their round.

We understand that slow play can be frustrating, but confronting or pressuring another group can make an enjoyable day uncomfortable for everyone.

If you believe there is an issue with the pace of play, please leave it until the end of your round and let a committee member know. You can also put your concerns in writing or email the Golf Committee at:

This allows the matter to be addressed appropriately and respectfully.

A Little Common Sense Goes a Long Way

At the end of the day, we are all here to have fun, enjoy the day and play golf.

Please:

  • Be aware of the group in front of you.
  • Know your distances and your own limits.
  • Never hit when there is a possibility you could reach another golfer.
  • Be patient when the group ahead cannot move forward.
  • Keep up with the pace of play without putting other golfers at risk.
  • Respect all players, regardless of their ability or experience.
  • Raise concerns appropriately rather than confronting fellow golfers on the course.

Good golf etiquette is about more than pace of play — it’s about safety, common sense and respect for everyone sharing the course.

Let’s all do our part to make Twin Towns Golf Club a place where everyone can enjoy their round.

LADIES GOLF Foursomes Championships

Ladies, it has been decided due to the weather we are experiencing and the uncertainty of Carts being on the course on Thursday and because of catering to transfer the Foursomes Championships to next Thursday, 27th August. We have transferred the field as it is set for this week to next week. No doubt there will be some members who cannot play next week, please take your name out and I will do my best to get a player for your partner.

This Thursday, 29th August will now be a single stableford if carts are allowed on the course. Please make your booking for this game as usual if you wish to okay.

🏆 DIVISION 6 BRINGS HOME THE EISENHOWER CUP!

Club Banora conquers Mullumbimby — mud, preferred lies and all!

Well, who said all those months of playing in wet conditions at Club Banora weren’t good preparation?

While other teams arrived at Mullumbimby looking at the conditions and wondering where their gumboots were, the Club Banora boys looked around and thought, “This feels just like home.”

And after taking on Yamba, Murwillumbah and Teven, our Division 6 team produced a fantastic performance to claim the 2026 Eisenhower Cup, winning the division by a massive 17 points!

Not a bad day at the office.

🏌️ The Division 6 Boys

There were a few late changes and some tactical team tweaking leading into the final.

One of those changes saw Mitch Taylor receive the call-up after casually firing a 64 nett in the August Monthly Medal. Apparently that was enough to get the selectors’ attention.

Mitch was given the honour of leading the team out and promptly delivered 32 points. Welcome to pennant golf, Mitch!

A special mention also has to go to Garry Dowding, who somehow managed to grind out 31 points while playing injured and basically operating on one leg!Most golfers struggle to make 31 points with two perfectly functioning legs, so Garry’s effort deserves some serious recognition. There were no excuses, no white flag — just get out there, hobble around Mullumbimby and get the job done for the team.

The scores were:

  • Mitch Taylor — 32 points
  • Sam Benny — 34 points
  • Patrick Tregellas — 33 points
  • Ryan Modini — 22 points
  • Michael Kemp — 33 points
  • Charles Paton — 31 points
  • Garry Dowding — 31 points

It was an excellent all-round team performance in difficult conditions, with Club Banora eventually taking the division by an impressive 17 points.

Perhaps our preparation was better than we realised. After spending half the year navigating wet fairways, preferred lies and wondering whether certain parts of our own course should be classified as wetlands, the Mullumbimby conditions weren’t going to scare us.

🚌 Every Team Needs a Bus Driver

A special mention must go to Ryan Modini

Ryan battled his way to 22 points, which probably wasn’t quite the number he’d pictured when he woke up that morning.

Unlucky mate.

But pennant victories aren’t built on Stableford points alone.

Someone had to drive the team bus.

Ryan got everyone there, got everyone home and therefore played an absolutely crucial role in the victory.

We’re officially recording it as 21 points and one major assist.

🏆 A Great Team Effort

On a personal note, I’d like to thank every member of the Division 6 team for their support, encouragement and focus throughout the day.

Pennant golf is very much a team event, and everyone contributed to what was a terrific result for Club Banora.

It was a great win and a fantastic moment for the club.

There was, however, one thing missing…

Terry “The Big Cat” Foster.

Unfortunately, The Big Cat wasn’t in attendance to witness the boys lift the Eisenhower Cup.

We’re not saying his absence motivated us…

…but we’re also not ruling it out.

Division 11 — So Close

Our Division 11 team travelled to Murwillumbah and unfortunately couldn’t quite bring home the Cup.

There were still some excellent individual performances, particularly:

Brian Springfield — 37 points
Brendon Marshall — 32 points

Great golf, boys, and unlucky to the entire Division 11 team.

Division 12

Our Division 12 representatives consisted of two Club Banora teams who also fought hard throughout the competition.

Unfortunately, they fell just short of bringing home the pennant, but once again represented Club Banora extremely well.

Thank You, Boys

Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who participated in the 2026 Northern Rivers Pennant season.

Considering the weather, cancellations and everything else thrown at this year’s competition, we can at least say:

We got one round in… and we got a final played!

And Club Banora managed to come home with some silverware.

I probably don’t say it enough, but we genuinely have a great bunch of guys at this club.

Year after year, people put their hands up, turn up, support their teammates and proudly represent Club Banora in pennant competition.

That means a lot.

Whether you won, lost, played brilliantly, battled all day or simply drove the bus, you represented the club and did Club Banora proud.

Congratulations to our Division 6 Eisenhower Cup champions, congratulations to everyone who represented Club Banora in 2026, and thank you for another memorable pennant campaign.

Now there’s only one thing left to do…

Enjoy the Cup, enjoy the bragging rights, and let’s come back and do it all again next year!
